A Study of Exploring the Direction of Korean Music Education in Teachers College

ABSTRACT

Nobody dency the fact that the Traditional Korean Music should be treated as an important cultural factor. Unfortunately the Korean Music is gradually diminishing not only in modern society, but also in music class in present school. The cause of the diminishing phenomena can be found in various factors. Owing to the historical background, the situation of Korean in the world, contemporary value, life style and structure, and development of civilization etc., the society requires diversity and higher competency. It is one of the greatest tasks for develop the Korean Music from the view point of these factors. This study tried to find the method of improvement among these factors. For the accomplishement of the purpose, it is necessary to train the qualified teachers in the Korean Music. Especially, one of the most important periods for development of compentency and attitude is the period of elementary school education. From this reason, this study chiefly concerned to find out the direction of the Korean Music Education in the Teachers College for training elementary school teachers. At first this study tried to find the situation of elementary school education in Korean and to find the task of Korean music education, in order to present the ways of soultion. The aim of the elementary school education is the common education that all of the people should be gotten. In order to develop the disposition of democratic people as a whole, the elementary school education should be fundamental education to maintain the balance of physical, social, moral, emotional and intellectual development. For the accomplishment of the aim in the elementary school, the curriculum consists of nine subjects and extra curriculum. The nine subjects are Moral Education, Korean Language, Social Study, Arithmetic, Natural Science, Phyics, Music, Fine Arts and Proactical Course. The function of Teachers College is not an professional institute for an specific skill such as Korean Music, but is an institute for training elementary school teachers who have the qualities to teach general and fundamental subjects. The tasks of Korean Music education, in the elementary school, from the above mentioned situation: (1) qualitative development (2) reconstruction of meaning and system of the elementary school education, (3) replacement of the theory of Korean Music and (4) development of facities and materials for teaching. Unfortunately there are few courses only to learn Korean Music in Teachers College, except intensive course and extra curriculum activity in 6 colleges among 11 Teachers Colleges. Those tho got the courses and extra activity, are effectively teaching Korean Music in the elementary school. From the above mentied situation on Korean Music education in the teachers training institute, it is impossible for all the students of Teachers College to have professional skills. However it is possible to improve Korean Music education, if the followings are concerned; 1. To recognize the important of Korean Music through understanding characteristics of Korean Music, such as understanding Jeong-Kan-Bo , a kind of note in our Korean Music style and depth of Korean Music. These abilities can be achieved through structurizing the fundamental contents and approching conceptually in the course of Elementary Music Teaching Method and Elementary Music Teaching Material Study . 2. To have all the Teachers College in Korea put in Korean Music Courses in the intensive course. If the measures are taken, the member of qualified Teachers on the Korean Music will be gradually increased in elementary school. 3. To organize Korean Music Study Club in Teachers College and to make many students participate the Club actively.
