ABSTRACT

The primary task of teachers college is to produce competent teachers who fill the role for quality education. To fulfil this task properly, what matters in the curriculum. This study centers on the investigation of the problems of the present curricelum as well as on the presentation of the desirable traits of the music teacher and the scope of the curriculum which will be of help in writing textbooks. Presently the students who enter the teachers college are in lack of basic knowledge and skill in music. If it is taken intoconsideration, more credits are to be allocated to music education. The most important characteristic of a music teacher is the ability to ask probabilistic questions with regard to musical work and musical elements. In writing textbooks what are needed is to compare beforehand the music curriculums of foreign countries, to enhance conceptual approach where musical elements are systematically presented focusing on structures of knowledge and spiral curriculum, and to clarify the assumptions supporting evaluation criteria and score assignment. With all these and others in mind basic orientation of the music curriculum is suggested. But further studies are needed to find out the optimum curriculum.
