ABSTRACT

Korean traditional music is an inherited music in which our ancestor`s artistic zest and serenity of mind are sublimated. The CHUITA -a elementary school`s 6th grade appreciation class musical piece is and orchestral concert music piece. Because our elementary schools has only a few percussion instruments, teachers cannot provide a desirable level of Korean traditional music appreciation. In addition it is very hard for students to feel the beauty of Korean traditional music with only a one hour session curriculum. Therefore it is necessary to develop an appropriate appreciation methodology and materials which best suit the children`s intellectual level and interest. In order to improve the comprehension level and foster a deeper intellectual appreciation of traditional music, I conducted a study in which the following processes were applied to the music appreciation program ; Firstly, extract elements of the traditional music appreciation and systemize those elements. Secondary, prepare optimized materials for the step by step appreciation. Thirdly, develop and apply the programmed instruction methodology. For a theoretical background I studied the purpose of the traditional music instruction and reviewed the textbook and guidebook with the intention of re-origanizing the class hour. I also investigated the concept and contents of traditional music appreciation centering around the appreciation instruction contents. Lastly, I researched the programmed instruction stages for the intellectual appreciation. Based on the above theories, I extracted 14 appreciation elements and systemized those elements into three stages ; initial appreciation, main appreciation, and advanced appreciation. Next, I prepared the optimized materials ; 2 collected items ; 13 edited items ; 11 developed items, for a total of 26 items. I then established 6 steps of the programmed instruction and 14 appreciation elements for application to the class using the appropriate materials. To verify this study, I checked the improvement of comprehension, interest and appreciation ability on the traditional music and observed the changes in children`s attitude. Several tests and observation results showed an significant improvement. Additionally, I could see a positive change in the children`s attitude and interest in traditional music. The overall result of this study was that the step-by-step programmed instruction with the systemized appreciation elements and materials improved the intellectual appreciation alility on the Korean traditional music class.
