Orientation to Teaching Music

ABSTRACT

This study is to seek answers to the four questions sepecially as they relate to musical learning; Why teach music? What should we teach? How should we teach? And when should we teach? Three views offer the answers to the first question, Why teach music? . Music is; 1) a part of the world about us, 2) a part of our heritage, and 3) a means of personal expression. The answers to why teach music give a particular focus to the decision regarding what to teach. In this study, there are three answers to the question, What should we teach . The answers are emphasized in regand to; 1) basic concepts of music 2) various musical skills and 3) repetorie of music literature. How should we teach is strongly concerned about the teaching method of each teacher. As a teacher, we must consider children`s physical, emotional, intellectual, and musical growth. This knowledge will be used in the selection of musical contents for each age-group and in planning the situatuin in which that contents is to be learned. The content of the music curriculum that has been proposed is both broad and deep. It includes to the attainment of the following: concepts essential to musical understanding, a variety of musical skills, and familiarity with a wide repetorie of compositions. For providing the meaningful musical experience to the students, it should be a sequential lesson plan on each class. For this reason it is important that the question. What should we teach be answered.
