ABSTRACT

To provide effective teaching strategies, some theories on education, psychology, sociology, anthropology and musicology are reviewed, and practical guidelines and suggestions are prepared. The topics of theory considered are `stage and phase` theory, `musical play and socialization`, `social learning and reinforcement`, `learning style, and `instruction`. The important guideline for the effective delivery of instruction by teachers to preschool children is about the classroom environment, which should be emphasized in music teaching, a child-centered curriculum, the teacher`s role as cultural transmitter, motivation and management in the teaching of music, and teacher`s disciplines with the information and high technology in the 21st century. Accordingly, based on the theories and practice, several teaching strategies with regard to singing, moving, playing, listening, note reading and creating with focus on the development of pitch concept for preschoolers are suggested to be included in teaching of music in the preschool settings. Furthermore, as a suggestion, teaching strategies need to be developed with focus on rhythm, loudness, timbre and form of music besides pitch concept for the younger children.
