Effective Teaching Method for Improving Listening Skill of Korean Traditional Music Using Visual Aids in Elementary School Course in Korea

ABSTRACT

The objective of this paper is to present the teaching and learning materials and instructional model in order to effectively teach listening skill of Korean traditional music existing in Korean music text books for the elementary school students in their third to sixth grade using visual aids. The existing Korean elementary music tent books contain ninteen Korean traditional musics such as . Compared to the previous ones, the text books contain many more Korean traditional musics. Despite of the expansion of the quantity of the musics, however, the teaching and learning materials following such expansion of quantity has not been properly presented. Therefore, interesting visual aids which fit elementary school level have been developed and introduced in this paper. At the same time, the instructional models have been introduced to help the teachers to utilize the visual aids for the effective teaching. From third to sixth grade, two musics have been selected at each grade, totalling eight. The teaching and learning materials mainly composed of illustrated musical notes. One of the following method has been selected in each illustrations. l. The theme of the music has been illustrated with form of sticks. 2. Drew a picture by getting a hint from the title. 3. The music can be divided into several parts and each parts can be made into a number ticket in order to draw rhythmical movement. 4. A listening map has been drawn to express the whole music. 5. Box shapes or color belts have been used to distinguish oh-sun-bo(staff notation) easily. Following musics have been selected and presented in this paper. 1. Third grade - (composed by Byung-Gi Hwang, Kayagum solo), 2. Fourth grade - , 3. Fifth grade - , 4. Sixth grade - , The illustrated musical notes presented here can be applied and developed into many different kind of materials by using CD-ROM and ect. The teaching can be more effective if the students can sing the song or play according to the actions in the music or create other musics instead of only listening to the music.
