ABSTRACT

The purpose of this paper is to examine the teacher`s guides for the 5th and 6th year music textbooks published by the Ministry of Education for the 7th Curriculum. The examination focuses on Korean classical music contents in the textbooks. Through this examination, quite a few serious problems have been observed. Teacher`s manuals are supposed to be written such that they guide teachers to the motives of the course and to more effective methods of teaching. With a close look at Korean classical music contents, however, the current teacher`s manuals do not seem to have been written with clear motivations. They have a plenty of statements that are not very comprehensible to teachers. In addition, it is not difficult to notice that they lack explanations and introduction of relevant materials without which many teachers would be impossible to get the point. The teacher`s manuals, eventually, are responsible for the situation in which music teachers get confused and even get lost in preparation for their classes. Finally, this paper offers some ideas for improvement such that teacher`s guides provide teachers with quality methods of teaching Korean classical music.
