ABSTRACT

Although the domain of music appreciation is emphasized in the current elementary music curriculum, a number of essential works are missing in the view of music history. The domain is composed of musical works derived mostly from the period of Classic and Romantic, and some composed after 20th century which are not likely to reflect the musical discours of modernism properly. Each period of music history is well characterized with it`s own compositional aspects and experiencing the unique aspects should be included in the curriculum. Choral music through out the long span of history well reflects the musical characteristics of each period. Not only for the educational purpose but also for the practical purpose in directing school choirs, choral music appreciation does very important roles. There are a number of musical CDs that can be used in the music class as listening materials. In order for them to be in an educational purpose, the criteria in selecting choral music also should be based on academic approach. To effectively accomplish the academic goals possibly designed by the teachers with creative ideas, the selected materials can be used in class in educating musical concepts such as the background of music history, choral types, vocal characteristics and dynamics in accordance with each period as well.
