Principles and Adaptation of Rhythm in Dalcroze Methodology

ABSTRACT

Emile Jaques-Dalcroze believed that our basic perception of musical rhythm is closely associated with motor sensations within the body. Through this concept, he formulated pedagogical ideas of education that combined rhythmic movement, ear training and improvisation.The purpose of this study was to clarify the principles of Dalcroze approach to music education, to investigate the materials in Dalcroze approach, and to suggest the learning program and the lesson plan in which Dalcroze approach is adapted to the music class in the elementary school.Following the introductory chapter including principles and definition of terms used in Dalcroze approach, the study will be organized as follows: The 34 rhythmic elements and the adaptation of those to activities to the class will be followed in Chapter II. Adaptation of Dalcroze in teaching music in the elementary school and actuallearning program and the sample lesson plan will be discussed in Chapter III. Conclusion will be followed as Chapter IV.
