A Study on the Imagination in Music Education: Focusing on the Music Listening Experience in Music Appreciation Activity

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to investigate the imagination in music education by the Music Listening of Experience in music appreciation activity.There is a close correlation between the creativity and the imagination; in order words, the imagination is based on the creativity. Therefore, a good deal of imagination is supposed to show the creativity.This investigation was focused on several aspects: imagination and creativity of theory in music education, music appreciation activities, music listening of theory through musical imagination. Major points of this study are as follows: (1) The concept of imagination by philosophical tradition of Western Europe (2) The educational importance of imagination and the role of teachers (3) The music education and imagination in activity of musical composition, performance, and appreciation.This study shows that imagination plays an integral role in music appreciation activity, and the music listening experience is based on appreciation activities.In addition, music appreciation activities in music education are to extend the musical imagination of students through musical experiences, and music education must give various musical experience opportunities allowing anindividual student to develop his or her musical imagination to the utmost extent.In this study, I propose that music appreciation education activities can improve musical imagination for pupils, and it is also needed to investigate the educational effects of imagination in other education activities.
