ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to find the relationship between children's music aptitude and movement ability. This relationship can be used to decide if we can use movement to enhance children ' s music aptitude. To find this relationship, we administered a music aptitude test and a "body responsivity" test, which measures the ability to move in response to music, to children. The body responsivity test consists of a set of musics and the corresponding body movements. During tests, students are supposed to perform movements corresponding to given musics. The body movements are videotaped and children ' s performances are measured by analyzing the tapes. Ten movements are devised, which include non-locomotive and locomotive movements. A total of 186 students who are 3th and 4th grade participated the test. We have obtained the following results:First, children are better at non-locomotive movements than locomotive movements that involve the transition of the center of mass.Second, the age difference matters in body responsivity (p <.001).The 4th grade students are better than the 3th grade students. Third, the relationship between music aptitude and body responsivity is statistically significant (p <.001)
