ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to examine the principal subjects of master`s theses in piano pedagogy majors published by 10 graduate schools in Korea. In total, 98 master`s theses were collected through the National Assembly Library database which is the biggest and most reliable database in Korea. The research subjects were classified into 10 categories which was developed by Meichang(2010)`s research. The principal subjects those were most frequently dealt in the masterps theses were as follows; 1. Methods and theory; 2. Repertoire; 3. Musicianship; 4. Piano curriculum & program; 5. Technique; 6. Learners; 7. Piano pedagogy discipline; 8. performance; 9. Teachers; 10. Technology. This study suggests that professional advice is inevitable as well as broad perspectives for surveying the various research subjects in piano pedagogy. The following results are suggested for the direction that Korean piano pedagogy should proceed. First, if piano pedagogues combine the research subjects in music education and piano education, they will be able to develop various research subjects especially in ``methods & theory`` and ``musicianship`` area. Second, in the area of ``piano repertoire`` and ``piano curriculum``, it is necessary to study different age of students and in different learning styles beyond the beginning level of students. Third, the following research subjects such as ``piano learner``, ``piano performance``, ``piano pedagogy discipline``, and technology`` have been rarely studied in Korean piano pedagogy. Even though those subjects are unfamiliar in Korea, it is essential to research in depth.
