China reformulated the school curriculum as it adopted the reform and opening policy in the 1980s, and traditional music education was incorporated into the school curriculum at this time. This was related to the political policy that China would construct Chinese-style communism. It also signified that China would develop music education appropriate for Chinese society, instead of following and mimicking the systems of other countries. New waves inspired Chinese people to pay more attention to their tradition, and traditional music also attracted the attention of the people. However, western music and western music education gained the predominating influence in China`s academic music circles, and the understanding of Chinese traditional music was very weak. To solve this problem, the Chinese government put the priority on the reform of the curricula of music education for elementary, middle and high school students. Music teachers were needed to successfully implement the revised curricula, so a lot of focus was put on designing the curriculum for the music education program at the college of education. The curriculum for the music education program at the college of education shows the current status of Chinese traditional music education. It can also provide ideas for the education and transmission of Korean traditional music. Considering these factors, it is very necessary to study the Chinese curriculum. However, it was hard to perform the research with all colleges of education because China has so many colleges of education. Representative colleges of education in regions were selected for the study, and the findings are summarized as follows: The aim of traditional music education has been quite achieved thanks to the Chinese government`s stress on traditional music education and the implementation of the curriculum by colleges of education. It was also confirmed that traditional music and western music were well balanced in the curriculum, unlike the past when western music predominated. While Han Chinese race`s traditional music was especially stressed, traditional music of other minority races and Chinese folk music in different regions were also included. To say again, the Chinese curriculum indicates that China has solved the problems arising from the curriculum and tried to include traditional music of different races into the curriculum. Western music education theories still prevail in the class of the music education program at the college of education. China has to formulate Chinese-style music education theories. As long as the current theories are kept, the status of Chinese traditional music might be downgraded. This problem is also the task we have to solve urgently.
