ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to present the case & development of a creativity-centered music education program as a pert of a preliminary educational curriculum for children with musical giftedness. The whole educational programs for the musically gifted, including the creativity-centered music education program have been provided by the A Young Musicians Academy since 2009, sponsored by the city government of Seoul, This study firstly examined theoretical backgrounds for the program, including the subjects of musical thinking and musical creativity. Followed was the introduction of creativity-centered music education program for technical skills for musical performance, which have been developed for the last three years, Significant findings that have been obtained through this study are as follows, Previous research and literature reviews reveal that a relatively sufficient body of theoretical and empirical evidences suggest that the creative thinking process based on music cognition plays a core role for developing musical giftedness. Based on this aforementioned theoretical exploration, this study proposes an instructional program, including instructional procedures of sensing-personalizing-constructing, instructional elements of musical concqt1rratnials-contexts-aDtivities, and a graded series of contents, arranged by the difficulty level of learning materials. This study suggests the program based on musical and creative thinking process can replace traditional music gifted programs, which puts emphasis on technical skills for musical performance, and provides alternatives at both theoretical and practical levels.
