Suggestions for Content and Improvement of Achievement Standards in Music Education

ABSTRACT

The present study seeks to examine development process, problem areas, and direction and proposal for achievement standards of music education in Korea, More precisely, the present study examines and analyzes American achievement standards that has served as the foundation of Korean achievement standards with regards to the contents and characteristics standing from educational reform of the 6Ih curriculum to the revised 2009. The adaptation of the American achievement standards has produced both positive and negative effects on Korean educational standard and policies, The term achievement standards originates from the American educational system. With a number of changes and reforms based on achievement level of the American standard, there is a need to formulate a new achievement standard that is more appropriate and subject-specific for Korean educational system. In this vein, the present study seeks to propose a policy and program need for a new music achievement standard with specific development model, A new standard would reflect content and scope of subject-matters, individual documentation for education process, standard on varying levels of achievement, content materials, teacher``s guide, and distributional effectiveness.
