A Survey on the Actual Conditions of Teaching Demonstration in Secondary Pre-Service Music Programs

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to investigate the actual conditions and status of teaching demonstration led by secondary pre-service music teachers as well as the pre-service music teachers` perceptions regarding the teaching demonstration. To this end, this study distributed copies of a questionnaire to 360 students in their junior and senior years at ten teachers` colleges and graduate schools of education across Korea The respondents turned out to have quite a good understanding and perception of teaching demonstration. They reported that they came to understand the importance of preparing for classes and communication skills as a result of leading teaching demonstration. They also reported an improved understanding of the teaching profession. They also pointed out that video recordings helped with their teaching. They also put the great emphasis on imparting the knowledge required by the curriculum in leading teaching demonstration. They believe that examples of teaching demonstration make their teaching more effective, and also that it is important for pre- service teachers to have a diverse range of demonstration methods in each discipline. The study intended to provide basic data and information that would provide practical knowledge for teaching demonstration.
