ABSTRACT

Research has been made for long on how to teach Korean music, but only recently the types and contents of Korean music teaching methods have been categorized and named. This study is aimed at examining the new Korean music teaching methods presented in the 2007 Revised Music Curriculum along with the types of Koran music researched so far and suggesting some guidelines on how to use Korean music teaching methods by analyzing the traditional Korean music instructions presented in the music textbooks and teacher`s manuals of 3 to 6 grade elementary school. The result of analysing the Korean music teaching methods used in activity areas reveals that the singing part employs a variety of teaching methods such as Garaksunbo use teaching method, Hanbae Gamji teaching method (Upper body use teaching method & lower body use teaching method), tapping-lap-to-the-beat teaching method, Sonsigirn use teaching method, Gujeonsimsu teaching method, play teaching method and integrated music and dance teaching method, and that playing music instrument part resorts to oral sound use teaching method, tapping-lap-to-the-beat teaching method, Yulmyung use teaching method, Hanbae Gamji teaching method, Chongbo(a score) use teaching method, and Jangdan by hand teaching method, etc. Making music part uses Sorisigim teaching method, Garaksunbo use teaching method, integrated music and dance teaching method, Hanbae Gwnji teaching method, and oral sound use teaching method while appreciation part adopts Hanbue Gamji teaching method, Sonsigim use teaching method, Chuimsae use teaching method, oral sound use teaching method, tapping-lap-to-the-beat teaching method and integrated music and dance teaching method, etc. The results of analysis show that the Korean music teaching methods presented in the current music textbooks and teacher`s manuals reflect the ones presented in the curriculum. However, problems have been determined that grade 5 and 6 textbooks have all different instructions according to the publishers and that singing part and appreciation part employ a variety of teaching methods while playing musical instrument part and making music part rely on just one or two teaching methods. To solve these problems, it is needed to find ways to make use of most of the teaching methods in every part of class and to develop more teaching methods for playing musical instruments and music composition.
