ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research is to study the necessity and the developmental suggestion for developing a convergent educational program focused on the arts. This research evolved out of the recognition that the function of the arts in the 21St century is varying according to the technological progress. Furthermore, manpower policy is currently changing to educate convergent students who can cross the borderlines between different fields flexibly. One of the main goals of developing convergent educational program is to improve students` creative thinking abilities by integrating teaching materials from diverse areas of subjects. So far most of convergent educational programs such as STEAM program were developed focused only science, math, technology, engineering. Unfortunately, the arts were taken lightly as a simple tool to support the STEM (Science, technology, engineering, mathematics) area. Now it is necessary for music educators and art educators to research and to participate in developing convergent educational program focussed on arts. This research provides the concept of convergent education, the necessity of convergent educational program focusing on arts, and the suggestions for the application in the educational field, etc. Music & art educators need to participate actively in the convergent curriculum development as much as science and math teachers do. In addition, Music & art educators need to guide the direction for developing a convergent educational program focusing the arts and to elevate the quality of the public art education.
