ABSTRACT

This paper aims to propose the phased inclusive activity method in strengthening the basic musicality of elementary students with the help of music textbooks for the 3rd and 4th grades in elementary schools which were changed on the basis of the music curriculum revised in 2007. The basic musicality is the general and the basic musical ability for children to develop before cultivating and improving musical skills. Furthermore, what students learn or how they do it or why they have to learn it is not properly taught in school. Teaching materials have been used without any specific change. Most people think that music class is only about singing songs from the textbooks. For the musical performances, good skills are evaluated as good ability. The phased inclusive activity approach is to strengthen the basic musicality for children in music education in a school; this paper proposes the phased teaching is suitable for each development stage of children by analyzing the textbooks. The stage is based on the skill learning sequence of Gordon. Next, this paper proposes the approach to use the lecture to focus on listening activity by selecting the contents of a class that shall be emphasized in the music class in an elementary school. Finally, this paper proposes the inclusive activity method that suggests the curriculum by connecting comprehension and activity.
