Research on the Impact of Group Music Activity on Personality

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to understand the impact of the group music activities on personality. For this purpose, after extracting factors of personality, a survey was conducted on selected schools that had collective music activities. Chorus. orchestra. band and musical were considered as the group music activities. 8 schools out of the excellent schools in Korea that had group music activities were selected randomly, and the survey was made on 589 students and 454 parents of the students. As the major factors of personality, sense of achievement, self-worth and sociality were selected. The result of the study showed that, first, over 70% of the students and parents thought group music activities had given a positive impact on all the variables related to personality. Second, it showed that group music activities gave the most impact on sociality among the three personality factors. Third, the effectiveness on personality could be different depending on collective music activities, and the students participating in the orchestra activity thought more positively for the effectiveness on personality than the students in other activities.
