ABSTRACT

This study aims to analyse the teachers` understanding of Korean traditional music. In order to achieve this the study investigates the reality of teaching Korean traditional music. With reference to this it is applying its outcomes into the curriculum`s content as well as educational situations such as teachers` training. Results from this analysis found a higher understanding of Mal-Buchimsae and Call and Response. This shows a higher competence when teaching Mal-Buchimsae and Call and Response. In contrast most teachers are lacking practical ability for Jungton and Sigimsae as they have a low level understanding of these concepts. Most teachers do not understand the concept of Hanbae and have a lack of knowledge for the teaching methods of Korean traditional music. Teachers` lack knowledge of Korean traditional music and the study also highlights a low level of professionalism when teaching and learning instruction. This study claims that the curriculum should be re-organised to prevent difficult and abstract concepts in Korean traditional music. Also the curriculum needs to discuss how to teach easily as well as integrate accessible terms for teaching and learning.
