The Effect of Participating in a School Orchestra on the Personalities of Elementary School Students

ABSTRACT

This study investigated the effect of participating in a school orchestra on the personality traits of elementary school students(grades 3~6; N=94). Students and parents completed the survey and the variables of gender grade period of time as an orchestra member and experience playing a musical instrument were examined. The results showed that both parents and students recognized that participating in a school orchestra has a positive effect on personality especially in improving self-esteem righteous behavior social consideration and cooperation in teamwork activity. It was also shown that parents recognized the impact on personality more than students. Significant differences in personality traits for the variables of gender and age were also found including teamwork cooperation of female students(t=-2.55 p<.05) diligence(t=2.23 p<.05) and self-esteem(F=4.46 p<.01) of male students and teamwork cooperation due to grade(F=3.11 p<.05). There were no significant differences found in personality due to period of time as an orchestra member and experience playing a musical instrument.
