ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to clarify the concept of ``expression`` in S. K. Langer`s music aesthetics. In her own numerous writings ``expression`` is a seminal concept buttressing her view of music as a symbolic form of human feeling. The concept of ``expression`` in the art-symbolism is not only different from that of the sign but also from that of discursive symbolism. Langer`s concept of ``expression`` is distinct from the concept of imitation or representation of explicit objects as in the usage of signs. Artistic symbolic expression is not an outpouring of self-expression of subjective feelings but a morphology of feelings in music form concerning the structure of feelings. Since feelings are projected in form as quality, they is no clear distinction between the symbol and object. Feeling and form are amalgamated into a prefectly undifferentiated fusion.
