After-School Program for Instrumental Music Education Based on Arts PROPEL

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to develop an after-school music program for instrumental education based on Arts PROPEL in an elementary school and see how this program influences their musical abilities and attitudes. Based on Arts PROPEL, an after-school program, a series of 22 times for instrumental education was developed and applied to an actual after-school site in order to observe the influence of this program on the performance skills and attitudes toward music of children. The results of the study were as follows; First, the performance levels of children were improved by this program that suggested a process of individual performances, group performances, instrumental ensemble. Secondly, the enhancement in the performance levels of the students played a positive effect on overall musical attitudes of children. Lastly, it was identified that the Arts PROPEL process, the creation, perception, reflection, influenced on the students` overall musical performance and led to their positive musical attitude. Recommendation and conclusion were provided for music teachers and after-school providers.
