The Student Orchestra Management Conditions through the Investigation of Teacher Awareness

ABSTRACT

This study has examined the management conditions of the student orchestra project supported by the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology since 2011 and the plan for improvement through the investigation on the awareness of teachers in charge of each school. According to the result of research, the teachers in charge were shown as having lack of experience in the activities related to the orchestra while responding that excessive work, relationship with parents and excessive interference of school administrators, etc are the factors giving stress. There were most number of schools operating the form in which all of the wind instrument, string instrument and percussion instrument with many schools sparing 5 hours of weekly. Schools were using an average of 5.8 outside instructors and the adequate practice room which is necessary for orchestra activity has not been secured. Also, the teachers in charge were thinking that the orchestra activity became a factor of positive change for the students` creativity, character and school life. The support of mid-long term budget, expansion of facilities, simplified work process, reduction of duties, extended teacher training, organization of instructor, providing abundant notes on the performed music and performance opportunities, etc are necessary for the student orchestra project to be managed more effectively and produce positive results.
