ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to perform a qualitative analysis on music education practices according to the level of music teaching efficacy. Among 235 elementary music teachers, upper and lower 20 percent teachers by the standard of scores of music teaching efficacy scale were chosen, then after considering basic variables, two teachers with high music teaching efficacy and two teachers with low music teaching efficacy were sampled. Four individual in-depth interviews and five times of non-participant observations per each music teacher were involved and analyzed. The results were as follows. First, there were differences between teachers with high music teaching efficacy and those with low music teaching efficacy, with regard to music teaching, interaction with students, and teaching environment. Second, regardless of the level of music teaching efficacy, there were similarities to interest and importance in music and music education. Lastly, some differences were revealed in music experiences after schoolteaching, perspectives on the attitude of colleague, school administrator, and parents toward music education, and desire for high quality school music education regardless of music teaching efficacy`s level.
