The Research Trends of Music Education in Korea by the Analysis of Korean Journal of Research in Music Education

ABSTRACT

This study aims to examine the research trends of the music education by journal analysis of ‘Korean Journal of Research in Music Education’ published by Korea Music Educators Society and to suggest the task and prospect of the research in music education. Total of 243 papers which were published from 2000 to 2012 were analyzed focusing on the subject of the study, method of study, and area of study. At first, the framework for analyzing research trends is suggested as a result of literature review. And then ‘Korean Journal of Research in Music Education’ from 2000 to 2012 have been analyzed by using of the framework. The research findings are as follows. First, literature research has been mostly in terms of subject of the study. However, research on the teacher including pre-service teacher has been increased rapidly. Second, according to research method, historical research and philosophical research has been decreased but, experimental research, descriptive research and qualitative research has been increasing. Third, related to area of research, music education methodology has been decreased. However, music education curriculum and psychology of music education has been increasing. In addition, popular music, after-school music program, and integration, were coming up as the new areas of research in music education.
