The purpose of this study is to investigate the case of music curriculum of Hamburg in Germany in order to explore the possibility of development of competency-based music curriculum. To achieve it, the study elaborates the curriculum structure and the ways of design used in competency-based curriculum, by analyzing music curriculum documents of Hamburg developed for elementary and secondary schools. The implications of this study are as follows: First, it is necessary to figure out the appropriate structure for music curriculum of Korea by reviewing the pros and cons of competency-based development. Second, competency-based music curriculum should be developed to reflect essential music-specific competencies as well as cross-curricular competencies suggested by general curriculum.
