An International Comparative Study on the Music Curriculums of Arts High Schools

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to analyze and compare music curriculums of arts high schools in different countries, and find out international trends and characteristics of music curriculums. Main findings of this study were the following: First, the educational goals of arts high schools in different countries focused on fostering students`` musical abilities and helping them prepared for the next educational stage or career. Second, not only traditional majors related to the classical music were commonly provided but practical music majors were offered in most countries. Third, based on the balanced form between theory and practice, music core curriculum of arts high schools in different countries consisted of specialized programs, such as differentiated, integrated, and experience based subjects. Fourth, some countries provided various ranges of music electives to meet students`` needs. Recommendations for the improvement of the music curriculums on arts high schools in Korea were discussed.
