ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to find a desirable improvement plan of secondary school music textbooks by evaluating the degree of connection between junior high and high school ‘music’ textbooks, ‘Music,’ ‘Music and Life’ and ‘Music and Career.’ The results of our study are as follows. We analyze all music pieces of the textbooks ‘Music,’ ‘Music and Life’ and ‘Music and Career.’ They consider music with various meters and tonalities and of various genres and countries. They treat these subjects sequentially and continuously in junior high and high schools. But textbook ‘Music and Career’ does not contain various pieces of music compared to textbooks ‘Music’ and ‘Music and Life’. ‘Music and Career’ connects to ‘Music’ less well than ‘Music and Life’. Therefore, high school textbook ‘Music and Career’ should improve the connection to junior high school textbook ‘Music’ and provide information for music related career by emphasizing practical music activities.
