A national curriculum could be said to reflect the basic ideas and values a country``s education advocates. Recently, each country attempts to incorporate how to develop various “competencies” for students living in a diversifying society and world into its national curriculum. Singapore included changing social requirements in its national curriculum, when revising the 2008 General Music Program Syllabus into the 2015 Syllabus General Music Programme. The revised music curriculum revolves around grade bands on the basis of elementary and middle school classes, proposes student achievement levels expected at the close of grade bands in a few “Learning Objectives”, and tries to develop the national capabilities called “21st Century Competencies”. Like this, Singapore is similar to Korea in recent trends. Therefore, the present study compares the 2015 General Music Program Syllabus with former curricula in Singapore, and thus draws out suggestions for national music curriculum in Korea.
