Changes of Teaching Contents in American School Music Education Related to Applying Music to Daily Life

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to explore the tendency to deal with applying music to daily life in American elementary and secondary schools. Viewing from the historical aspect, the actual effect of music instruction led to the generalization of music class in American schools. According to this tradition, applying music seems to be carrying out a role to conduct the necessity of music class in school education even though its status does not dominate the whole curricula for school music in the United States. The 1994 National Standards for Music Education and the 2014 Music Standards are indicating content standards of relationships between music and various disciplines to enhance the effective utilization of music. However, applying music to daily life is considered to be a subsidiary activity in American music education because musical knowledge and skills stand out as being more important than the rest.
