The purpose of this study is to analyze pre-service music teachers`` perception on how secondary teacher education programs affect music teaching competency. The research participants were 151 pre-service music teachers from music education undergraduate and graduate programs. The results are as follows. First, teaching domain is the biggest influence on pre-service teachers`` perceived education programs followed by professionalism and professional skill/knowledge domain. Second, pre-service teachers in graduate programs give higher ratings in areas such as content knowledge compared to those in undergraduate programs. Third, the programs’ methods classes and educational theoretical perspectives are the biggest factors that affect teaching competency. Last of all, this study proposes that programs need to incorporate more practical classes to enhance teaching competency.
