ABSTRACT

Hanslick is a formalist in the field of music education as his music aesthetics relies on formal beauty of music works. He argued that emotional approach is not a right way to understand the musical meaning of works which have to be considered art music. For music fundamentally needs to express only musical ideas, sounding forms that are moving should be the essence of music. However, his statement also implies a need for musical beauty to harmonize with its surrounding factors through fantasy, which allows human beings to sublimate our mind to their original value. Formalism in music education can therefore combine aesthetic principles with its counter partner, referentialism in music education because we have to support students in improving comprehensive competence in life.
