Development of Web-based Courseware for Contemporary Music Learning

ABSTRACT

This research aims to find the most effective teaching method to teach contemporary music using high-technology with ease in the education field. Among various contemporary music styles, the study uses four main themes: Twelve-tone Serialism, Total Serial Music, Musique Concrete, and Minimal Music. This study developed a web-based courseware which not only acts as a medium for each theme, but to allow students to interact with the materials. The program will be developed into a formal mobile application, so that it can cope with digital textbooks. From understanding the basic principles through conceptual learning and creative learning based on direct input in the middle stage, the study believes more intuitive grasp of composition skill is available. In addition, student can summarize the learning content through examine how theory is applied with existing appreciation learning, and self-evaluation using quizzes. This has significance for making the learners interested in contemporary music, to evoke an effective and active understanding of complicated (sophisticated) notion of contemporary music and composition technique. Students can be well acquainted to contemporary music through this web-based courseware program, and take an interest in contemporary music from creative learning applying various composing technique and appreciating learning. This learning method is expected to develop a perspective of contemporary music, furthermore, to be helpful in the understanding of culture within this generation.
