The Influence of Participation in Music Competition on Musical Self-efficacy of Elementary School Students

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of participating in music competitions on musical self-efficacy and to understand the positive and negative aspects of music competition. Both pre-test and post-test for musical self-efficacy were conducted for 199 elementary students who participated in music competitions. In addition, the change of their perceptions of competition was surveyed by open-ended questions. The results indicated that the experience of music competition positively influence on subjects` musical self-efficacy. Important variables for musical self-efficacy include we ther to receive awards, levels of award, nervousness, and stress. The self efficacy of the group that received no award from the competition was declined after the competitions. These results represent that it is necessary to teach students with profound understanding of both positive and negative effects of music competition.
