ABSTRACT

Based on Dalcroze`s method, this study suggests a method of reading a picture book using rhythms. The subjects of the study were picture books for 2-year-olds or younger that were selected by the Institute for Promoting Reading Culture and the scope of analysis was all the texts that can express rhythm in the picture books which were analyzed using time-space-energy, the elements of rhythm by Dalcroze. The framework of the analysis was designed by the researcher to synthesize studies on the rhythm elements of the Dalcroze crossing at home and abroad. Based on the result of analysis, ways of expression using linguistic rhythm and kinesthetic rhythm were devised. Such reading method using rhythm can be a way that can integrate music, language, and body and it will have a positive influence on the musicality, linguistic development, and body perception of young infants. Also, it can enable active interaction between young infants and their teacher reading together through the experience of giving, receiving, and expressing rhythm. It is expected that this reading method will be able to make infants and children participate in picture book reading more actively and happily.
