The purpose of this study is to suggest how to develop Keyboard harmony textbooks for college piano majors and to guide a class curriculum with selecting a proper textbook for Keyboard harmony. Eight textbooks were selected for this study, which have been used in colleges/universities in Korea. General features of the eight different kinds of textbooks were compared and the characteristics of structure and contents were analyzed based on the eight activities of sight reading, improvisation, play by ear, harmonization, playing scores, chord progression, figured bass, transposition proposed by Walton (1951), Duckworth(1960), Nicklett(1966). As a result of the analysis, they were written not for piano majors but for both music majors and non-music majors. Most of the textbooks were published decades ago and have not been revised for years. Also there were several textbooks that were limited to 2-3 activities. The study recommends that it is necessary to develop keyboard harmony textbooks written mainly for piano majors and incorporating more various keyboard skills.
