ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to analyze the music curriculum in International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme(IB PYP) and to draw implications for music education in Korea. The IB PYP is an internationally accredited curriculum adopted by schools in many countries including Korea. The distinct characteristic of the PYP is that it presents the curriculum in which six subjects and six transdisciplinary themes are integrated, and focuses on helping students to actively explore each subject and transdisciplinary theme. In the IB PYP, music can be a lens for exploring transdisciplinary themes, and the students’ inquiry is learning ‘about’ music and transdisciplinary themes ‘through’ music is intensified in the spiral structure throughout the school year. The music curriculum in the PYP provides implications for organizing the transdisciplinary theme-based music curriculum integrated with other subjects and the student-centered inquiry learning.
