Comparison of Creative and Improvisational Class Activities in Korean and American Elementary Music Textbooks

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to compare the teaching and learning contents of creative improvisation activities aimed at developing musical creativity in Korean and American elementary school music textbooks, and to explore implications or applicability before the revision of the 2022 curriculum. One of the distinct differences was that the central teaching and learning contents of creative improvisation activities were lyrics in Korea, whereas chord patterns and pitch patterns in the United States. Also, compared to the Korean, the American textbooks had more than 5 to 10 times more in terms of the quantitative composition of the creative improvisation activities activities. And, in terms of the length of the song, most of the songs in the American textbooks were 8 bars or less, whereas in the Korean, the songs were mostly 16 bars or more. In the American textbooks, creative improvisation activities are located at the beginning, cadence, middle, and ending notes of the song.
