ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to investigate the status of IRB review of academic journals published by the Korean Music Education Society, to expand awareness of human subject research, and provide basic data related to IRB. For this study, a full-scope examination was performed on all 430 papers published in the ‘KJRME’ spanning the period from the 2013 revision and enforcement of the Bioethics and Safety Act up to 2024. Of these, the 177 articles identified as human-subject research were subsequently categorized, utilizing content analysis, a methodological approach for transforming and analyzing qualitative data into a quantitative format. The results are as follows. First, from 2013 to 2024, human subject studies were consistently published every year, and the subjects of the studies ranged from infants as young as 43 months to the elderly. Among them, studies on adults were found to be more numerous than those who are underage. Second, the research methods were human subject research, with 62.2% (110 cases) being quantitative research, 30.5% (54 cases) being qualitative research, and 7.3% (13 cases) being mixed method research. Finally, the study that first disclosed IRB review was published in 2020(Volume 49), and the study that disclosed institutional approval numbers appeared in 2023(Volume 52).
