ABSTRACT

This study aims to propose a practical approach to implementing values and attitude education in music through the design and application of an appreciation lesson based on the Values Clarification Theory. To achievethis, it first explores the theoretical significance of values and attitude education in music by examining the affective domain development theory among the three educational objectives and the key values and attitudes competencies proposed by the OECD. Furthermore, it analyzes the strategies of the Values Clarification Theory from a pedagogical perspective to investigate its applicability to music education. Based on these theoretical foundations, a middle school music appreciation lesson was designed, using ‘Bak taneun daemok’ (‘Gourd breaking episode’) from the pansori <Heungboga> as the main repertoire, and the practical teaching-learning process was presented. This study reveals that music appreciation experiences can broaden learners’ emotions and perceptions, leading to self-reflection and the internalization of values, thereby demonstrating the educational significance and practical potential of values and attitude education in the music curriculum.
